Roulette is one of the most famous, loved, and gambled on casino games in the world today. The history of Roulette can be traced back to 18th century France, where Mathematician Blaise Pascal introduced the roulette wheel in Paris, 1796. Indeed, the name roulette itself, means little wheel in the French Language. The creation of the wheel is believed to be based on a mixture of English, French and Italian games, including; Roly Poly, Reiner, Hoca, Biribi, and Ace of hearts. When the roulette wheel was first introduced, it contained the numbers 1-36, a single zero, and a double zero. However, in some casinos, players were not allowed to be bet upon zero or double zero; instead, they were reserved for the house to maintain mathematical advantage. This 38 numbered wheel, now commonly associated as the ‘American roulette wheel’, was actually originated in France and was the principle version of the roulette during the games early years. However, the original 38 numbered wheel was soon to be overtaken in popularity with an updated wheel, ‘the single zero wheel’, which is today known as the European Roulette wheel and is the most played roulette wheel in the world today. The single zero wheel itself was introduced in Germany, by Frenchmen François and Louis Blanc, where the rationale behind a single zero wheel was to offer players a better, more competitive wheel with just one ‘House’ number. Although most casinos now accept bets on ‘zeros’, they are still considered to be ‘house numbers’ because all subsequent colour, section, column, odd / even, and high or low bets are losing bets, giving the house an advantage to scoop all table bets when a zero or double zero number is spun. Origins of the where the idea for roulette began are widespread. However, the two principal theories are that Pascal was trying to build a natural ‘non-stop’ spinning wheel, which failed, and the game was subsequently designed as an afterthought, much to the delight of casinos! The second theory is more popular to folklore conspiracies, where legend has it that Pascal made a deal with the devil; this is based on the fact that the sum of all numbers 1-36, equals 666; the most significant number in the Bible, ‘the number of the beast’. Many players enjoy the ‘thrill and risk of roulette’. One of the most famous roulette stories of modern times was that of Ashley Revell, aged 32, from the UK. Ashley Revell, a notorious thrill seeking gambler saved his entire life savings, sold all his possessions and travelled to Vegas. He then bet everything he owned on a single spin of the roulette wheel, totaling $135,300 on red. Luckily enough, red 7 was where the roulette ball landed and he doubled his money. With the advances in technology, players can now experience the thrill and excitement of roulette on their mobile phone. Instead of a spinning wheel and bouncing ball, mobile phone roulette simulates these actions with exciting graphics and the use of powerful software that generates random numbers, bringing roulette history into the twenty-first century. Indeed, mobile casino roulette ultimately allows players the same sense of anticipation and nervous excitement as if you were in the real casino, without the need to tip the croupier! |
