Video poker, or draw poker as it may be known, gained significant popularity in the late 1970’s Las Vegas. Today, Draw Poker has a huge following and is a firmly established casino gambling game.

The history of video poker however, can be traced to 1891, Brooklyn, New York. This is where the first video poker machine was introduced and, similar to a one armed bandit, the player pulled a lever and the reels would spin to reveal a poker hand. Originally, this machine paid out prizes of alcohol and tobacco for winning poker hands. It wasn’t until the late 1970’s however, that Video poker boomed in popularity and can be directly explained somewhat by the advance in technology, and in particular the release of PC’s (personal computers).

Draw Poker is an extension of the Video poker game, where a player is given the option to hold a reel (or drum) if they feel it is of particular advantage to increase their chance of winning, or improving the potential value of the winning hand.
